Mint, or mentha, has over 25 species. However, the leaf, fresh or dried, is cultivated for culinary use. Mint has a delightful warm, fresh, sweet and aromatic flavor and leaves a terrific aftertaste. They’re used in teas, jellies, ice creams, syrups and candies. Mint is also very popular with lamb in many countries, such as the United States and Britain.
In addition, a lot of alcoholic drinks use mint either to garnish the drink or add flavor. There’s mint liqueur, mint julep, the mojito and creme de menthe, used in a grasshopper.
Essential oil made from mint is used in breath fresheners, gum and candy, among other things.
Mint was originally used medicinally to treat stomach and chest pain. In the Middle Ages, people whitened their teeth with powdered mint leaves! Mint tea is a strong diuretic and mint is also widely used in aromatherapy.
